WELCOME TO ALGO WARS!
Algo Wars is a John Henry vs The Machine-like creative contest that I created, pitting two social media producers head to head, to see who could create the most good promos in four hours: One producer using normal editing software; The other using a new AI called Social Department to enhance - not replace - their work.
Our contestants are real-life, talented producer/editors: Chris Alford who’s worked on countless projects, including Abbot Elementary; and Shauna Cowit, a Webby-winning editor who worked on Nick Jr’s reintroduction of Steve from Blues Clues in social video.
Our Judges are Erin Franzman, VP Digital & Social Strategy at CBS; and JR Griffin, SVP of Digital at Fremantle US.
Chris did use usual editing software - which does indeed include a certain amount of artificial intelligence. Shauna was given access to Social Department, which does not edit promos themselves, but follows the prompts and direction from the producer/editor.
There’s a ton of hyperbole around AI these days. Some say AI will take over the planet and do away with humans, a la The Matrix. Others predict AI will continue set us free from menial mental tasks and help create a workplace utopia. We made this creative bake-off to focus on how and why AI can prove most useful - not by replacing jobs, but by enhancing them.
So, who won? Our man Chris or Shauna and her human-driven Machine?
