Happy Friday War & Peaceniks! Let’s stream the day away…
On Wednesday, I opened MIPCOM’s FAST Summit with a presentation called What’s Next in FAST. One of the focal points was this brand new Map of FAST WORLD.
The map shows the biggest regions for FAST usage right now (the countries are scaled by population), and uses data from Omdia to show the revenue trajectory for each (to the right of each region). However, you’ll note, the FAST Map is not all about fast. To the left of each nation is the average total of streaming services used by the people there, both free and paid. And above each country, you’ll see the share of each population that uses YouTube regularly.
Why? Because as I’ve written previously, FAST, alone, is not a strategy. Yes we are still very early days for FAST, but even out five or more years, the total potential market remains incredibly small, when compared to the larger streaming ecosystem. In fact, the ceiling for FAST is low when just compared to its biggest free streaming competitor, YouTube.
The major theme for my keynote was that FAST needs to grow up, just to catch up to the current marketplace. I’ve given you some segments of the data I used to make that point earlier this week. There’s even more in the presentation itself.
Last week, on my monthly zoominar, I recorded a rehearsal for the MIPCOM keynote with some of our awesome subscribers. It was three times as long as the eventual presentation, with far more data, info, and insights than I gave folks in Cannes.
The full video from that presentation, and a downloadable version of the Cannes deck are both below the paywall. If you don’t see the paywall, merci for being a paying Peacenik! If you do see the paywall, and you want to see the presentation, well then, you know what to do!
I’ll be back next week with more bullshit, until then…
Enjoy the weekend!
