Netflix’ earnings call was a shock to the system: The first quarter in a decade in which they’ve lost subs, resulting in a drop of more than 1/3 of their market cap.
When we look back on the history of media, that earnings call will punctuate a turning point that started at the beginning of this year. 2022 is the end of one era; and the beginning another.
This “shock to the system” dramatically resized the world’s biggest paid TV channel. And it sent me back to redraw my Map of the Media Universe.
To fully appreciate the change 2022 has brought to the size and shape of the media universe, I then went back 10 months.
To close the loop, I went to the first map, 20 months ago…
I created these maps to look, literally, at how the universe changes, so I can understand why. Knowing what drives the change we’ve seen, allows us to guess at how it will change next. This week’s changes, and looking back 20 months showed me some key things about what’s happened, and what might happen next.
What became clear to me, redrawing the map and looking back to the original, is that 2022 has already, irreparably changed everything.
The question is: How?
