Gaming is the largest sector of the media economy, with $200 billion in revenue last year. Which is why today, I’m taking a spin around the Mario Kart track and taking a look at Nintendo.
The gaming industry saw a huge boost during lockdown, with sales growing 26% from 2019-2021. But this year has not been as kind to the Gamingverse. Ampere Analysis projects gaming sales to shrink in 2022, as people, you know, go outside and stuff.
Nintendo is one of the five largest gaming companies on earth. They make three of the top five best selling gaming devices in history. Since they launched their latest handheld device, Switch, in 2017, Nintendo has seen even bigger increases in sales than the industry at large.
Since their first year of Switch sales, Nintendo has seen substantial growth in sales of both hardware and gaming software. They doubled their device sales from 2017 to 2018, and saw an increase of 37% in devices sales from 2019 to 2021.
