In the history of podcasts, This American Life, Serial, and S-Town stand out. Not only are they three of the most important and best made series in the genre (ever), between them these three shows helped shape the nature of modern podcasting and have served as the training grounds for some of the most influential artists and journalists in the space.
Brian Reed is one such artist and journalist. He was the lead producer on This American Life, where oversaw the show and personally produced groundbreaking stories, including "What Happened at Dos Erres," which garnered a Peabody Award. He was present at the birth of Serial, the landmark docu-series that helped reinvent the art form. Then Brian created and hosted the weird, mesmerizing, and gothically beautiful S-Town, which won a Peabody and Webby, and is an absolute must listen.
Now Reed has focused his mic and journalistic lens on… journalism itself. His new docu-series is Question Everything - a podcasting quest to discover what journalism and trust truly mean, today, in the post-truth era.
This week on our podcast, The Media Odyssey, Marion Ranchet and I turn the tables and mics around and interview Brian Reed about what it takes to make a truly great podcast, why he started his own podcasting studio, how to make money in podcasting, whether or not all pods need to have video, and what happens to journalism, now that everyone with an iPhone thinks they’re a reporter.
No matter which podcast is your all-time fave, this podcast episode is for you!
