Each year the Göteborg Film Festival commissions The Nostradamus Report: “to sketch out the future of the screen industries 3–5 years ahead, through interviews with industry experts and research.” The 2022 report was written by Johanna Koljonen who interviewed experts from across the world and our industries. I was lucky enough to be invited by Ms. Koljonen to be one of those interviewed. Here is the report: It’s a brilliant, frank, and transparent exploration of the current state of media and the myriad challenges we now face.
The report and the chaos in media it so aptly reflects, begs many questions: Why are we such a mess? How did we so misjudge the current strains of disruption? How can we right these ships? What IS coming next??
Some answers: We are a mess because the industry focuses on quarterly earnings calls over important signs of change. We misjudge disruption because, as a collective, we are afraid of change. Even those start-ups who spark change, come to fear it, once they become The Man. We can start to harness the tsunami when we refocus our attention on the TRUE wants and needs of our consumers. And we can begin to see what’s coming next, when we remember to (get this) listen to them. Today’s example…
