In the prehistoric era, circa fall 2019, I wrote about how unprepared the industry was for the arrival of Disney+. (I posted it on LinkedIn, which once again proves its dumpster fire status by not having that post live anymore.)
Based on the 100% awareness among my New York University students, not of the service itself but of the exact date it would launch, I posited that the TV world was going to make a quantum leap for which its ruling class was wholly unprepared.
Change had been fast up until that point - Netflix was already dominant - but my argument was that the arrival of Disney would fundamentally change the actual JOBS of those who worked in TV and film; from wholesalers to retailers; and that few in the community understood what that meant: Churn, CAC & LTVs, oh my! That scouting reports seems to have panned out.
It’s three years later. We are again at that big of an inflection point: In fact, game day is tomorrow.
