In 1972, the United States was embroiled in a losing war in Vietnam, and a contentious presidential election – and the American government was lying to its citizens about both. Due to reporting by an independent Fourth Estate, however, two years later, the winner of that election resigned from office, and three years later, the United States abandoned its rudderless mission in Vietnam and brought its troops home.
Sadly today, if American Journalists reported that its leaders were setting puppies on fire in the middle of Pennsylvania Avenue – even if there were live footage of burning canines – most Americans would not believe it.
